About this pro

Our designs are all 100% original and tayored the fit the individual preferences of our clients. The installation of the designed landscape is implemented under the direct supervision of the designer offering a continuity between design and installation second to none.

Landscaping and horticulture have been part of my life sense I can remember- growing up we always had veggies fresh from the garden on the table and my father had a landscaping business for some years as well. This made it a constant in my life and I was working in the industry my self by age 15 which continued through college where I majored In Fine Art. After school I tried out some different careers but always came back to landscaping so I decided to go back and get a second degree in horticulture. Now I have a found a fulfilling outlet for the creative artist side of me in the form of landscape design as well as the hands on digging in the dirt that I grew up with making for an ideal balance.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

An appointment for consultation is setup, we meet at the job site and talk about clients vision, needs and wants for the project. I then write up an estimate and when applicable do a rough draft of whatever drafting work is needed for the project. If the client likes my estimate and first draft I draft a more detailed set of plans from which to work along with a schedule of work and a contract representing said plans and schedule. At the time the contract is signed I collect a deposit and work begins within a week.

If the client mostly likes my initial estimate but wants to make some edits I redraft and edit until we reach a place from which the client is comfortable with the proposed work and payments. At which point I do a final draft and move forward as was previously described.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a BA in Fine Art from UCSC where I received departmental and college honors upon graduation. I also have an AA in Hortaculture from Cabrillo community college, I'm certified with ARCS(American Rain water Catchment Society), I've trained and worked as a mason, and as a carpenter, I've completed classes in drafting for architecture and landscape architecture all in addition to the 24 years I've been installing landscapes.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.

My pricing system is standardized,  yes, but it has taken me more hours than I can count to program in all the details and variable options of any one of the hundred plus landscape features for which I offer installation. I hope it will suffice to say that I input the measurements, materials and any other pertinent information into my estimating app and it tells me how much to charge. My margins are more than fair.

How did you get started in this business?

My mom and dad were both avid gardners so growing up plants inside and out were always present and a topic of discussion. As I got into my teens my interests were more in building and creating which evolved along artistic lines through college. I continued to work as a landscaper, mostly Maintance accounts through college and in my twenties. Finally I decided to combine the two and I started Randall Ray Deaigns after going back to school to fill any missing holes in my drafting and hortaculture skill set.

What types of customers have you worked with?

Work primarily with residential home owners currently, though I do occasionally get a renter that just really wants a particular feature installed. Additionally I work with Realestate agents on staging properties, property management companies and other businesses.
